Dashboard Basics

Build your first dashboard.

Who it's forFor the analyst, manager, or student who already lives in Excel and now needs to turn a spreadsheet into a shareable, interactive dashboard in Power BI — with no prior BI experience assumed.

Go from spreadsheets to real dashboards. If you know Excel, you can do this — connect your data, build clear visuals, and publish your first…

What you'll be able to do

  • Connect an Excel/CSV file, fix the column data types, and load it cleanly into Power BI Desktop.
  • Build a one-page report with bar, line, and card visuals that all cross-filter each other.
  • Add slicers (date, category) that control every visual on the page.
  • Apply consistent formatting and titles so the dashboard looks deliberate, not default.

Sounds familiar?

  • I can build a pivot table, but a "dashboard" feels like a whole different skill I've never been taught.
  • I imported my data and half my numbers came in as text — now nothing will sum.
  • My charts look nothing like the polished dashboards I see online and I don't know what I'm missing.
  • I added a slicer but it only filters one chart, not the whole page.

Data Modelling & DAX

Model data and write DAX.

Who it's forFor someone comfortable building basic Power BI reports who now hits a wall the moment they need relationships between tables, reusable measures, or year-over-year calculations.

Build dashboards that scale: model your data properly, shape it with Power Query, and write DAX measures for the calculations real reports need —…

What you'll be able to do

  • Build a clean star-schema model (fact + dimension tables) with correct relationships and a date table.
  • Write explicit DAX measures with CALCULATE, SUM, and FILTER, and explain why a measure beats a column.
  • Shape and clean raw data in Power Query (split, unpivot, merge) before it reaches the model.
  • Produce working time-intelligence measures (YoY, YTD, running total) and wire up drill-through.

Sounds familiar?

  • My numbers double or blow up when I join two tables and I don't understand why.
  • I keep writing the same calculation as a column over and over instead of one reusable measure.
  • The difference between a calculated column and a measure still isn't clicking for me.
  • I need year-over-year and month-to-date, but my DAX returns the same number for every row.

BI Pro & Tableau

Storytelling, performance, Tableau.

Who it's forFor a confident Power BI user ready to make reports fast, secure, and persuasive — and to become bilingual by adding the fundamentals of Tableau alongside it.

Become the analyst teams rely on: optimise report performance, secure data with row-level security, tell a clear story with your visuals, and add…

What you'll be able to do

  • Diagnose and fix a slow report using Performance Analyzer, a leaner model, and tighter DAX.
  • Implement Row-Level Security with DAX roles so each user sees only their permitted rows.
  • Restructure a cluttered dashboard into a guided narrative with a clear focal point.
  • Rebuild a Power BI dashboard in Tableau using calculated fields and an LOD expression, and publish it.

Sounds familiar?

  • My report is slow to load and I don't know whether it's the model, the DAX, or the visuals.
  • Different users need to see only their own region's rows, and I have no idea how to enforce that.
  • My dashboard shows the data but doesn't tell a story — stakeholders don't know what to look at first.
  • My company is moving to Tableau and I'm worried everything I learned in Power BI is now useless.

How a Power BI & Tableau session works

Every subject runs on the same method — a live, hands-on hour built so the learning sticks, with everything you make saved and yours to keep.

Live co-op coding

We work in one shared editor with you driving — you write the code or derive the maths while I steer in real time, not by watching slides.

Saveable whiteboard

Every diagram and derivation is sketched on a shared whiteboard you keep — the canvas is saved and yours to revisit after the hour.

Written recap

You leave with a written summary of what changed and one or two things to practise, so the session keeps working after we hang up.

Off-class help

Stuck between sessions? Send the error or the question and get unblocked — support does not stop the moment the call ends.

Assignments & checkpoints

We close each hour with a checkpoint you attempt solo, so we both see it actually landed — and loop back before the time runs out if it did not.

Your class archive

Code, whiteboards and recaps live in one place you can return to — a growing folder of everything we have built together.

// what to expect

Honest about how it goes

No guarantees, no fixed curriculum — just a specific, repeatable way of working that gets you unstuck on Power BI & Tableau.

Built around your goal

There is no fixed syllabus to keep pace with. The hour is built backwards from the one thing you need — a failing assignment, a concept that will not stick, a project to ship.

Diagnosed, not re-taught

We find the precise step where it breaks down instead of re-covering what you already know — so the time goes to the gap that actually matters.

You drive, I steer

You do the work in real time while I guide — that is how it sticks. You leave able to do it yourself, not just having watched me do it.

Honest pace & pricing

You only pay for the levels and pace that fit. We agree the plan together after the free first session — no packages you do not need.
